Current News By Region for June 2010:

Welcome to the latest addition of NYSORVA News. As you look to this year's riding season. Here's a look at what NYSORA has been busy doing in the off season. First, we are almost ready to announce our selection for club liability insurance. Countless hours have been spent making sure the coverage fits all the possible needs of all New York State clubs. Affordability was second only to the coverage. We focused on the small clubs here to get them affordable insurance that they need to continue to grow.
Secondly, we have received a grant from MIC/SVIA. The funds are designated to retain a lobbyist. We have retained Chris Del guidance and have already got the ATV weight limit bill passed in the Senate and have met with key committee members in the State Assembly. We would like to thank them for their support.
Many events are scheduled for this riding season. Try and get out and show your support by attending.  From upstate to downstate we continue to grow. Don't forget to go on the NYSORVA website and sign the petition in favor of the two bills that we are supporting in Albany. Also, sign-up for our email list. Encourage everyone you know to do so as well.
This is also proving to be one of the best years ever for our annual raffle. There are currently over 7,000 tickets in circulation. A special Thank You goes out to Can-Am for donating the Grand Prize! Go to the NYSORVA website for more details or see details in this edition.
On this Memorial Day don't forget to thank a veteran for their sacrifices.

Happy Trails,
The NYSORVA Staff

Region 1 & 2 News (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, Suffolk, Nassau Counties)
by Tom Riker - Delegate:

Well 2009 was a great year for Long Island Recreational Trails Conservancy we increased membership by over 30% we were successful in running 2 locations with a total of 19 fund raiser events and in turn we were able to issue a number of educational based financial scholarships to local families. We also ran our first equestrian fund raiser / poker run. We had a major set back with the loss of our good friend and our ATV safety instructor Rich Kappel that was killed in a automobile accident. We were the featured club in the January 2010 issue of Dirt Wheels magazine and we hosted the Yamaha dealer demo day. For 2010 we are working on adding 2 new trails for the motorcycles and atvs and trying to fill the gap created by the loss of Mr. Kappel. We are also working with the county and the town of Southampton on a large parcel of land. This year we hope to add 2 equestrian and 2 mountain bike events to our existing atv and motorcycle schedule. The clubs success is a direct reflection of its members and their dedication to continue to provide a safe environment for families to ride. Without their help we would not exist.

mpire Trail Alliance (ETA) - Access for all members - Website: EmpireTrails.com
We are a newly formed club with the plan to develop multi-use trails in NYS. Beginning in Sullivan County our ultimate goal is to expand into Greene, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Rockland and Westchester Counties.

We have approached many landowners in Sullivan County who are eager to allow access to their property. Since we are fully insured and incorporated, we offer them the coverage they are comfortable with. We are making great strides in our trail development.

As a newly formed club there is a lot of work to be down but we are confident we will have several miles of riding area. New members are welcome. Any landowners who are interested in providing access to their property for trail development please contact a board member or our president on our website.

If you are interest in becoming a representative for your county please contact Joe Tinari - President

Our meetings are frequent during the initial development of our trails. We have a regularly scheduled meeting the first Monday of every month. Please visit our website for up to date information and ongoing progress. Empiretrails.com

Upcoming ETA Events will be A ride / Mud Bog With Mud Tech Inc on June 19th and 20th. If you have any Questions please Contact 845-932-8260.

NYATV has recently adapted to our quickly growing web following by revamping our entire site. NYATV is planning on having another great Season and will be providing information and promo booths at tons of 2010 Events and Expos as well as rides. NYATV recently teamed up with Empire Trail Alliance to once again Participate in Sullivan Counties Annual Litter Pluck on May 2nd. Lewis County
ATV Trail Development Program

As the riding season starts to wind down, our Trail Development Program is in high gear. There are several projects in the works that we hope to have completed before it gets too cold and the snow flies (which is any day now).
Works continues in the Cronk Road County Reforestation lot as we have one additional bridge to be constructed which will allow us to expand the trail riding to connect into the main trail. In the spring one additional trail will be flagged and cleared bring the completed trails on this one reforestation lot to just over 5 miles of off road riding. In the spring of 2010 and depending when the snow melts we will expand the trails again in the Cronk reforestation lot.
With the morning temperatures dropping as each day that we head out to the trails we will move down to the Reforestation lots on the McDonald and Forks road. With the environmental study moving forward we will construct two small bridges off of the McDonald road to eliminate any wet crossings as laid out in the county ATV Trail Plan and Countywide GEIS documents to complete the trail that will provide a picture perfect view of the Deer River. Just across the road off of Forks Road we have one additional trail to construct and after an additional review of the area one small Bridge may be needed.
I know some folks can't wait for the snow to fly but if the snowman will hold off a little longer the Trail crew will make their way to the Reforestation lot on the Culipepper road. The loggers have completed their work and have moved out of the area. We have made an assessment of the area and with a little TLC we should be able to bring online a couple additional miles of off-road trails.
OH, I forgot to mention in between all of the above projects we have been working on Private land to complete the Hill to Brantingham loop. This past week we started to construct a 750 ft fence to protect a farmer's field and to guide the riders along. With a little luck with in the next couple of weeks we will start the construction of a 40-foot bridge to complete this trail.
I would like to thank all of the ATV and Dirt Bike riders that have enjoyed riding our trail system, and for being patient as we work to build safe trails for everyone to enjoy. Remember, if you want more trails, we need private landowners to build trails on. If trail development is too slow for you, stop riding, complaining, crying, and making negative comments and start doing trail work.

by Alan Zogg - Delegate & Alex Danyluk - Alternate Delegate
:

The Sherburne Wheelers ATV Club, Inc. is off to a roaring start for the 2010 riding season!  We have been cleaning up the Sherburne Wheeler Trail System and adding more trails to our trail system, with the hope of connecting the new trails to the existing trails.  At Christmas 2009, our club "adopted" 3 families in our community and provided them with a complete Holiday dinner and at least 6 toys for each child in each family.  This was in addition to our "Christmas Cares Project" which netted 579 new, unwrapped toys for children in our community  The Sherburne Wheelers presently has sent out 82 $100 gas cards to assist people battling cancer with their travel expenses.  This is done through monies collected at an event which we founded in 2007...Bike Night at Gilligan's.  A weekly 50/50 raffle is held and ALL monies collected goes for this purpose!  During Bike Night (Wednesday nights May - September) we also collect non-perishable food items which we donate to our local food pantry...over 1,400 items were collected and donated in 2009.  Earlier in the spring, we attended a few "open houses" at local ATV/motorcycle dealerships with the goal of promoting safe, responsible riding;  and recruiting new members...it was very succussful.   The Sherburne Wheelers club has teamed up (for the 2nd year) with the American Legion Riders Post 189 (Norwich) to form a team  for the Relay For Life Walk to be held in July in Chenango County to raise money for the American Cancer Society.   We have several trail rides, BBQ's and picnic/rides planned for the riding season...only hope the weather cooperates.  The Sherburne Wheelers is presently involved in selling the NYSORVA raffle tickets...which we do proudly to support NYSORVA.  Happy riding!  Ride safe!

by Jeffrey Binga - Delegate:

As the season gears up I would like to remind everyone to be safe, always ride legal and stay on the trails.
The Tri-County Trail Riders Club has notified me that their multi-use trail in Pendleton is starting to enforce the Club members policy. Law enforcement has and will be patrolling the trail for violators. If you know anyone that is not a member that rides the trail, let them know to join the club or face heavy fines. Memberships are only available at their meetings, they are held the third Wednesday of each month, held at Brauers or the Ship-N-Shore.
The trail being developed to the North is still moving forward. Although things have stalled somewhat. I am looking for help, anyone in the Newfane/Barker area are encouraged to contact me.
The Silver Springs Trail Corridor is awaiting approval from the Railroad Company. The proposed trail stretches from Warsaw to Machias and is 37 miles one way. A special thanks needs to go out to Gary Hume for taking the lead on this project. He has held three public meetings and collected letters of support from businesses and over 1,000 names on a petition in favor of the trail. This trail will also have campgrounds, several eateries and gas station. This will be a NYTRO Western NY Club trail. Anyone interested in joining can contact me.
If you live in the region and can help start a club or know of land to ride on, then contact me at region9@nysorva.org .  Whatever you need NYSORVA has the resources to help.

About NYSORVA [Back to Top]

NYSORVA is the statewide advocacy group focused on issues that affect the trail motorcycling and ATVing community, such as land-use issues and legislation. NYSORVA is recognized for it relevance by national organizations such as the American Motorcyclists Assn. (AMA), National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC), The Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC), and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). NYSORVA is the organization designated by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as the state's conduit for communication with the wheeled off-highway vehicle (OHV) user community.

USDA Forest Service estimates as of 2005, that 1.9 million New York citizens, or 13.1% of the population 16+ years of age participate in wheeled-OHV recreation, the third-largest riding population of all states in the nation.

In brief, NYSORVA's mission is to work with all interested parties for increased safe and environmentally-conscious OHV recreational opportunities on both public and private lands in NY State for our growing community.

NYSORVA is a nonprofit corporation, is run entirely by a volunteer staff of trail riding enthusiasts, and is funded with donations from clubs, individuals, dealers and grant agencies.

There are very limited publicly-open riding areas in NY for wheeled-OHVs and a few private club land areas. Your best bet for finding places to ride is to join a local club to learn of the opportunities in your area. See the New York Clubs page for a list of clubs and links.

NYS law requires that any ATV (any multi-wheeled off-highway vehicle including trail bikes, defined per NYS Vehicle & Traffic law) be registered and insured for a minimum of liability, with few exceptions. However an ATV plate does not allow access to public highways unless a municipality has designated such roads for ATV travel (just a few localities have this provision for local roads), nor does paying the registration fee currently buy you any services (such as trail facilities) other than the peace of mind of legal compliance (see the full story in the "It's the Law" section). We hope that passage of a Trail Program bill will change this situation.

Please ride safely, tread lightly, and keep your machines maintained and quiet, registered and insured.
