Current News By Region for November 2009:

Welcome to the latest addition of NYSORVA News. Throughout the State there are seven (7)new clubs and several hundred miles of new trails being built. This riding season has been one of the most productive so far. As we look ahead to next year NYSORVA is already planning its political strategy and will focus on the UTV bill and its passage. This year is a re-election year for most politicians, so you may be called upon to put the pressure on our politicians.

We are also going to be watching the regional DEC offices and forest managers for planning meetings. We need to attend these planning meetings and make sure that the ATV community is part of that plan. If you hear of any such meetings please contact me or your NYSORVA Regional rep.

New York State has decided to raise our Reg fees again. As of September 1, 2009 ATV registrations will increase from $ 10.00 to $ 12.50. Also, Trailer reg fees increased to $ 42.50 from $ 34.00.Keep up the fight and use the off season to expand existing trials or start new ones.We have started another raffle that will last the entire year. Grand Prize is a 2010 CanAm Outlander XT, donated by CanAm to help NEW YORK State Clubs. View the Flyer HERE. This is a great way for Clubs to raise dollars for their needs, As 50% of the donated ticket price goes to the Club.

Region 1 & 2 News (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, Suffolk, Nassau Counties)
by Tom Riker - Delegate:

The Long Island Recreational Trails Conservancy (LIRTC) has had a busy year. With our 2 facilities we have had 15 successful fund raising events to date and have 5 more planned for the remainder of the year. We have awarded numerous education based financial grants to local people in the community. We have gained the support of our local councilman and a number of the county legislators who have taken the time from their busy schedules to be present and assist with the grant presentation.

In June the club suffered a tremendous loss when Rich Kappel was killed in a car crash but Thanks to the help of Mr. Kappel we were able to supply over 100 riders with safety training. Rich did so much for the club and showed a tireless passion for the sport, he will be missed.

We are working on 2 new trails 1 for ATVs and 1 for advanced motorcycles. We have held ride days for both Polaris and Yamaha and we thank them for their continued support.

In August we opened the trails and had our first equestrian fund raiser the event was a complete success and we are looking at making it a regular addition to our yearly schedule.

John Whitaker has been the man behind the web site and has spent many hours making it one of the nicest club sites.

Riders that attend the events will soon be able to contact Joe weinman at www.backprint.com/joe on the web to purchase photos from the day.

We continue to enforce strict sound tests and gear checks to ensure a safe day for the family a lot of this would not be possible without the help of the Palmer family, the Romer family and the Morea family along with volunteering from all of the members. As we move through the last quarter of the year we look at what we can improve for the families and riders for 2010.

Region 3 News (Sullivan, Ulster, Orange, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester Counties)
by Joe Tinari- Delegate & Shelly Levesque- Alternate Delegate:

Empire Trail Alliance (ETA) - Access for all members - Website: EmpireTrails.com
We are a newly formed club with the plan to develop multi-use trails in NYS. Beginning in Sullivan County our ultimate goal is to expand into Greene, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Rockland and Westchester Counties.
We have approached many landowners in Sullivan County who are eager to allow access to their property. Since we are fully insured and incorporated, we offer them the coverage they are comfortable with. We are making great strides in our trail development.
As a newly formed club there is a lot of work to be down but we are confident we will have several miles of riding area. New members are welcome. Any landowners who are interested in providing access to their property for trail development please contact a board member or our president on our website. If you are interest in becoming a representative for your county please contact Joe Tinari - President
Our meetings are frequent during the initial development of our trails. We have a regularly scheduled meeting the first Monday of every month. Please visit our website for up to date information and ongoing progress. Empiretrails.com

NYATV is currently adapting to our quickly growing web following by revamping our entire site. The site will now feature a mobile site as well so Users can follow all of there favorite NYATV posts or anything else on the site from there cell phone. Lewis County
ATV Trail Development Program

As the riding season starts to wind down, our Trail Development Program is in high gear. There are several projects in the works that we hope to have completed before it gets too cold and the snow flies (which is any day now).

Works continues in the Cronk Road County Reforestation lot as we have one additional bridge to be constructed which will allow us to expand the trail riding to connect into the main trail. In the spring one additional trail will be flagged and cleared bring the completed trails on this one reforestation lot to just over 5 miles of off road riding. In the spring of 2010 and depending when the snow melts we will expand the trails again in the Cronk reforestation lot.
With the morning temperatures dropping as each day that we head out to the trails we will move down to the Reforestation lots on the McDonald and Forks road. With the environmental study moving forward we will construct two small bridges off of the McDonald road to eliminate any wet crossings as laid out in the county ATV Trail Plan and Countywide GEIS documents to complete the trail that will provide a picture perfect view of the Deer River. Just across the road off of Forks Road we have one additional trail to construct and after an additional review of the area one small Bridge may be needed.

I know some folks can't wait for the snow to fly but if the snowman will hold off a little longer the Trail crew will make their way to the Reforestation lot on the Culipepper road. The loggers have completed their work and have moved out of the area. We have made an assessment of the area and with a little TLC we should be able to bring online a couple additional miles of off-road trails.
OH, I forgot to mention in between all of the above projects we have been working on Private land to complete the Hill to Brantingham loop. This past week we started to construct a 750 ft fence to protect a farmer's field and to guide the riders along. With a little luck with in the next couple of weeks we will start the construction of a 40-foot bridge to complete this trail.
I would like to thank all of the ATV and Dirt Bike riders that have enjoyed riding our trail system, and for being patient as we work to build safe trails for everyone to enjoy. Remember, if you want more trails, we need private landowners to build trails on. If trail development is too slow for you, stop riding, complaining, crying, and making negative comments and start doing trail work.

NEXT ISSUE: Update on Trail Permit Program

"The Sherburne Wheelers ATV Club, Inc., winding down our 5th year, has accomplished much in the way of community support.  To date, we have given out 52 $100 gas cards to assist with travel expenses for people battling cancer.  This money was raised at Bike Night at Gilligan's and McCredy's Rally...both of which are sponsored by the Sherburne Wheelers ATV Club. As the Sherburne Wheelers Trail System will be closing soon for hunting season, the Sherburne Wheelers will be preparing for Christmas parades, our annual toy drive, and our annual coat drive.

by Jeffrey Binga - Delegate:

The annual ATV and Snowmobile Grass drags were held in September and raised more than $ 3,500.00 for the Shawnee Fire Company. There were over 100 riders.
The new trial system being developed to the North is still moving forward. Anyone in the Newfane/Barker area are encouraged to contact me.
Another trail is planned for Wyoming County. This trail is being called the Silver Springs Trail Corridor. It stretches from Warsaw to Machias and is 37 miles one way. A special thanks needs to go out to Gary Hume for taking the lead on this project. This trail will also have campgrounds, several eateries and gas station.  I am still trying to verify that Honda is giving grants for trail signage. The grants supposed to be open to clubs and municipalities.
If you live in the region and can help start a club or know of land to ride on, then contact me at region9@nysorva.org

Whatever you need NYSORVA has the resources to help.

About NYSORVA [Back to Top]

NYSORVA is the statewide advocacy group focused on issues that affect the trail motorcycling and ATVing community, such as land-use issues and legislation. NYSORVA is recognized for it relevance by national organizations such as the American Motorcyclists Assn. (AMA), National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC), The Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC), and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC). NYSORVA is the organization designated by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as the state's conduit for communication with the wheeled off-highway vehicle (OHV) user community.

USDA Forest Service estimates as of 2005, that 1.9 million New York citizens, or 13.1% of the population 16+ years of age participate in wheeled-OHV recreation, the third-largest riding population of all states in the nation.

In brief, NYSORVA's mission is to work with all interested parties for increased safe and environmentally-conscious OHV recreational opportunities on both public and private lands in NY State for our growing community.

NYSORVA is a nonprofit corporation, is run entirely by a volunteer staff of trail riding enthusiasts, and is funded with donations from clubs, individuals, dealers and grant agencies.

There are very limited publicly-open riding areas in NY for wheeled-OHVs and a few private club land areas. Your best bet for finding places to ride is to join a local club to learn of the opportunities in your area. See the New York Clubs page for a list of clubs and links.

NYS law requires that any ATV (any multi-wheeled off-highway vehicle including trail bikes, defined per NYS Vehicle & Traffic law) be registered and insured for a minimum of liability, with few exceptions. However an ATV plate does not allow access to public highways unless a municipality has designated such roads for ATV travel (just a few localities have this provision for local roads), nor does paying the registration fee currently buy you any services (such as trail facilities) other than the peace of mind of legal compliance (see the full story in the "It's the Law" section). We hope that passage of a Trail Program bill will change this situation.

Please ride safely, tread lightly, and keep your machines maintained and quiet, registered and insured.
