Another state forest in Lewis County could
soon become lost to ATV's and Sleds.
Talks
are underway between New York State and the military to give
Fort Drum a special permit to use the Frank E. Jadwin State
Forest to train troops. Jadwin Memorial State Forest is in
the Town of Diana in Lewis County.
They
are trying to close the Frank Jadwin forest located on both
sides of SR 812 between Harrisville and Croghan. If this is
allowed to happen the trail systems for ATV's and Sleds will
be closed between Croghan and Harrisville,
The
land runs on both sides of State Route 812 and is situated
between the communities of Natural Bridge and Harrisville
just miles from Fort Drum.
The
initial discussions revolved around 20,000 acres but it has
escalated to 57,000 acres and is one of the largest forest
preserves in the state.
If
the talks are successful an agreement could happen by the
end of this year or the beginning of next year.
