DEC SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ABOUT JADWIN STATE FOREST Meeting Scheduled for December 1, 2004, at Harrisville Central School, Lewis County

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Sandra L. LeBarron today announced that a public meeting about Jadwin State Forest will be held on December 1, 2004, at
Harrisville Central School in Harrisville, Lewis County. The use of Jadwin State Forest may be considered by DEC officials in a proposal for training by Fort Drum to take place in the area. The 20,000-acre Jadwin
State Forest is located outside of the Adirondack Forest Preserve in the towns of Diana and Croghan, and south of the Village of Harrisville in northern Lewis County.

"DEC would like to hear from the public who utilize this State Forest and from persons who live adjacent to it," LeBarron said. "The possible use of portions of Jadwin for training by Fort Drum has been raised and this meeting will be an opportunity to provide input to DEC about the uses of this State Forest."

Fort Drum has preliminarily contacted DEC about the possible use of Jadwin State Forest in Lewis County for training purposes. This meeting will provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about
why Jadwin State Forest is being proposed for possible use by the Army. Primarily, DEC wants to further understand the types of public, residential, and commercial use in and around this State Forest, and
will use this input to review any proposal about future uses of Jadwin.

The public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at the Harrisville Central School, Harrisville, in the school auditorium.  The school is located just off State Route 3 in Lewis
County, not far from the St. Lawrence County line. From the Watertown/Carthage direction, turn left off Route 3 onto Mill Street, then turn right onto Pirate Lane.

People can also send comments about Jadwin State Forest to DEC by mailing them to: David Smith, Regional Forester, NYSDEC, 317 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601, or email comments to
